Pop-off Archival (PAT) Satellite Tag results to date….

One day's  depth and light data from a Pop-off tag

  • Data indicates that the sharks spend a considerable amount of time less than 10m from the surface (37%)

  • Over 75% of the time the sharks stayed in the top 50 metres but the deepest dive was recorded at 796 metres
  • They preferred to spend most of the time in water between 25 º to 30ºC
The position data from the pop-of tags has been inconclusive but all of the tags popped off in the vicinity of Mahe  indicating that the sharks had remained in the local area during the periods concerned, up to 3 months. However as the deepest depths recorded were far in excess of the depths encountered on the  Seychelles plateau it has to be concluded that they moved off the plateau for at least some time during the study  period.
