Photo ID & Marker Tag  Results ….

A recovered tag showing break-up and fouling compared to a new tag
  • Marker tagging indicated that up to 14% of the sharks tagged in one year were seen again the next year, confirming that the sharks have a high affinity or fidelity to this area.

  • However,  the condition of most of resighted tags has not been good and accurate animal identification has been difficult because of the break up of the tag due to fouling by marine organisms.

  • Photo Identification has allowed us to identify over 360 individual sharks between 2001-2007 and increased the numbers of sharks resighted each year.

  • Population modeling computer programs estimate that there is a population of some 348 to 488 sharks in the 'site-faithful' population that are joined each year by an equal number of individuals (from a greater Indian Ocean population?) that are only ever seen once.
