Project results to date….

The GEF funded components of the Whale Shark Programme from  2001 to 2003 achieved several notable successes.

  • Over 70 sharks tagged with new placard type tags

  • 4 sharks tagged with archival pop-off satellite tags

  • 4 shark tagged with a Spot2 satellite tags

  • 2 Acoustic tags deployed

  • Over 230 in-water encounters since project start

  • Up to 49 sharks a day located by our micro-light aircraft during the Autumn season

Since then the programme has been largely self-funded by the participation of the public on in-water monitoring trips, with additional support from the Save Our Seas Foundation to support satellite tracking and data analysis. Our current findings are summarised in the reports in the links on the left while our current activities are covered on our whale shark blog.
