Djibouti Whale Shark Monitoring Expedition 2011
December 31st - January 6th, January 7th - 13th, January 14th - 20th 2011

Three weeks of scientific expedition are planned to study whale sharks in the waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura, Djibouti; the expedition is being jointly organised by DECAN, a Djibouti NGO and Megaptera an international NGO, in association with MCSS, who helped set up a whale shark monitoring programme in Djibouti five years ago. This is now an annual expedition to continue the work that MCSS helped implement in 2006 where this aggregation of whale shark was first scientifically documented and continued so successfully in 2009 & 2010.

Participants will assist in the collection of data on these sharks (through photographs or videos for photo-identification, tissue sampling for DNA analysis, compilation of the data, photo-identification matching with previous years, etc).

The
expedition will be based aboard the DELI, a two-masted live-aboard dhow of 26m. Costs per person are Eu1150 per week excluding air-fares; costs include airport to vessel transfers, full board accommodation sharing a cabin on the Deli, as well as accommodation at the Djibouti Sheraton for the last night of each trip. Several post-trip excursions are available at additional cost, such as a trip to Lac Assal or to the DECAN Cheetah Sanctuary.

Participants should be over the age of 21, in good physical condition and competent swimmers. On site training will be provided into the basic techniques necessary for the programme by the MCSS team. If you wish to participate please download the information sheet and application form.
