How to observe marine mammals without disturbing themCetaceans are wild animals. They are threatened species, some are specifically protected and none should be disturbed. Being careful not to disturb their tranquility is essential for their safekeeping. Enjoy the spectacle they offer by observing them from a distance. Do not move toward them, do not pursue them, do not cut across their path. Keep at a reasonable distance (100 m or more). Often curious, they sometimes choose to swim near boats and surf or bow-ride in the boat's wake. If this happens keeping a constant direction and avoiding sudden accelerations are the best way to encourage them to come and stay with you. When diving, do not follow them, you could loose your way or dive too deep! Watch your depth-meter or dive-computer and your compass. |
