In-water Sightings

Between July to December 2004, 70 sightings were reported with 62 in-water encounters. A total of 38 sharks were identified. Of these 26 were tagged with AquaSign marker tags. Twenty one sharks were sexed (19 M / 2 F). 

With regard to re-sighting, 7 tagged sharks and 4 untagged sharks were re-sighted from this season. As for re-sightings of sharks identified last year, 2  sharks have returned to Seychelles, identity to be confirmed.

Aerial sightings
Aerial survey’s using the MCSS Micro-light started in July, with a total of 144 flight lasting 107 Hrs 32 minutes. 423 Aerial sighting were reported with a maximum of 26 on one flight.

Please note that the data has been compiled from observations made by MCSS and members of the Seychelles National Whale Shark Monitoring Network.

 

International Whale Shark Conference, Perth, Australia

An international conference aimed at enhancing international collaboration on the conservation of whale sharks, will be held between the 9th to 12th May 2005 in Perth, Australia. 

The conference will explore current knowledge of whale sharks, the threats they face and the nature of their interactions with humans across both developed and developing countries. Delegates will present a range of perspectives on current management practices involving whale sharks, conservation, fishing, eco-tourism and other socio-economic issues.
