Volunteering with MCSS

During 2004, a number of overseas volunteers have assisted in MCSS activities. Their hard work and dedication deserves as special mention in our pages.

January: Valerie Houmeau, from France, (postgraduate) was with MCSS for 6 months assisting primarily with Turtle monitoring, both on nesting beaches and in water monitoring.

May: Matthieu Grossjean and Julie Gresser, also from France, (postgraduates) worked with MCSS for 2 months. Having missed the turtle season and being too early for the whale sharks, they spent a lot of time in the bay carrying out fish surveys and setting up a substrate mapping project, and a bird monitoring project.

July: Milena Palka (postgraduate) came all the way from Canada to see whale sharks and got lucky. During her 2 month stay she continued the work started by Matthieu and Julie and assisted Johan the MCSS micro-light pilot with aerial surveys.

July: Johan Anderson, the Micro-light pilot from south Africa, was back in Seychelles for the 3rd year running to assist with the whale shark monitoring

August: Although Giancarlo Lacchia and Manuela Labardi were here for only 3 weeks, they were invaluable in expanding the in water turtle survey programme. They managed to squeeze in 1 whale shark trip before having to go back to Italy.

October: Adam Forster and Kate Grosse, (UK postgraduates), arrived in time for the 2004-05 turtle nesting season. During the month they were here, they continued the work started by Valerie..

October: Tarryn Sproates from south Africa, participated mainly in turtle monitoring but was also roped into sorting out the plankton sample pots which Elke, MCSS Research Officer, had been neglecting for the past year.

November: Tom Butcher had so much fun tagging whales sharks last year , he came back in 2004 to help with nesting turtle monitoring.

All Year: Tracy Koloziej, lives in Seychelles and has been invaluable as a last minute assistant when Elke needed help.

NOTE: 2004 was not a good year for whale shark sightings but all our volunteers (except Tom) managed to get in the water with at least one animal while they were in Seychelles.
